The gritty, steel sink's sour scent Wafted to me by hot steam, Separating itself from the spicket's stream. My Grandma Ana's warm, worn hands Extended at my eye level, Reminding me of freshly made tortillas, With their comforting aroma, As they passed by my tiny nose. They grab our bottle of witches' brew, So cleverly disguised in a bottle, Of Dawn Original Dishwashing Soap. Squirt, splash- a little is all we needed, To lather her liver-spotted hands Into a frothy, clean batter. She cupped her hands and held them out, I took them to my lips and blew, While inhaling a scent I know only as our own, Clean, innocent and timeless to the world. I giggled delighted as I set them free, The most exquisite bubbles once held captive. I forever would be their rescuer - And they would always remain my dearest friends. |

The Constant Watcher When she was a child late at night, Running away to find Peter Pan and his lost boys, That's when she noticed him first, As he smiled at her innocence in its early hours, Hoping she would remember to play forever. Then it smelled like the cologne and sweat, When she was a new girl late at night, Creeping back into her bedroom window, After kissing her first love good night, That's when she noticed him again, As he waved goodbye with the daybreak, Delighted that she was settled for the night. Next it grew to smell of vodka and gin, When she became a naïve woman, Dancing in an urban cave, After fighting her new day to day That's when she noticed him through blurry eyes, As he looked down on her with the worry of a mother hen, Praying he would see her the following night. With time his aroma changed to vapor rub and warm milk, When she became a blessed mother, Rocking her baby ever so restless, After hours without the slightest touch of sleep, That's when she found comfort in his glow, As he smiled down on her through the window, Proud like a grandfather puffing a cigar. On the last day he smelled like fresh laundry and rain, When she met him for that final night, Breathing each breath in a rhythm grown faint, After hours of reflections and goodbyes, That's when she loved him the most, As he cried a single tear from his yellow skin, Thankful for being her constant watcher... |
